The hack works great. I had to make minor adjustments as well. The card seems to be faster than the REV 0 card even though REV A is not up yet. I am seeing approximately 200Kbps faster that REV 0. Completed test at dslreports.com. Hummm, I think REV A is being nailed up faster than anticipated. I know San Diego has 2 towers up, and it seems like the LA metro area is moving faster.

Glad it is working.

Let us know what minor adjustments you had to make, so we can append to our directions on EVDOinfo.com.

1) Under PPP: Added #777 as telephone number
3) Under Modem: Unchecked "Wait for dial tone before dialing"

Also, as a novice mac user I was a little unclear on how to save the changes within the .plist file. I figured it out after trial and error, but a screen shot would help the novice user on what to expect.

Are you going to submit a hack for the new Sierra card?

The OS X 10.4.8 update is out. Is there any word on whether the S720 is supported (without editing the plist file in the kernel extension)?

Looks like 10.4.8 doesn't add any new card support Sad

Finally got around to doing some testing today.

Mac PowerBook 15 inch with Merlin S720

Same Merlin S720 on a Sony Vaio:

So, taking away test variations, it looks like the speed is about the same on a Mac or PC.

Warning

Installing the latest firmware upgrade on your Merlin S720 will make the hack described above stop working - you will no longer be able to get your S720 working with your PowerBook.

We will post more information to this thread as it changes.

Ok, suppose you are a moron - (cough, cough, me) and you didnt read this thread before inserting the card into a PC, activating and updating to the latest firmware. Is there any way to roll back or any progress towards a hack?

I feel like an idiot. Should have checked here first

AFAIK, you will need to return your current card to get one with the old firmware. Although it may be technically possible to "upgrade" back to the previous firmware, there is no known source for this upgrade.

I'm expecting this same card on Friday, and I'm sure glad I came here first!

Unfortunately, there isn't a way that we are aware of to roll back the firmware. We tried, but the updated firmware is just not recognized in the PowerBook anymore.

We sent out an email to all those that purchased a Merlin S720 from us to let them know to NOT do the firmware upgrade if they are using it with an Apple PowerBook.

We wrote about the state of Apple and Sprint on our blog, see:

Thanks for the reply. I guess it's time to dump my powerbook. Just too many issues like this have popped up in the last few years - and so for business, it'll just be safer to go with windows....

Appreciate your efforts and the wealth of information shared here on this site.

I can understand your frustration, but dumping the PowerBook seems a little premature and excessive. Shocked

If you aren't going to use it, though, I'd be happy to take it off your hands! Very Happy

Great News...

We now have a way to get the Novatel S720 (with new firmwware) working with PowerBooks again, for those that purchased their S720 from us, please email support at booster-antenna.com and we will mail you directions.

For those that are purchasing a new Novatel S720, be sure to include the "Mac Pre-activate" option (no cost to you) and your card will come pre-activate, updated firmware and directions to get it working. Of course, phone/email support included for those that purchase from us.

Unfortunately I did not purchase my S720 from you guys but do need the instructions to get it to work (again) with my powerbook. It's either that or pay Sprint $200 to close my account and switch over to Verizon.

Will someone post instructions to get the card with updated firmware to work, or, if not, can I purchase them at a reasonable price?

Also does the new hack support Rev A or does it run under Rev 0 even if the network is available?

Thanks.

I am in the same situation as the previous person.

Is there a way to get the PB15" and the updated firmware S720 to co-exist?

I would also pay to have this work.

Crying or Very sad
