ExpressCard Adapter - Convert ExpressCard to PCMCIA
As the industry switches from PCMCIA cards to ExpressCards, many ask how easy can the transition be to this new format?
Some are looking for devices like the Elan U132 USB To PCMCIA Adapter that allows you to plug a PCMCIA card into an adapter that plugs into a USB port.
The real killer product is an ExpressCard Caddy or ExpressCard to PCMCIA Adapter. Purchase an ExpressCard and ExpressCard Caddy now, and use in your existing PCMCIA laptop. Later, when you upgrade to a new laptop with an ExpressCard, remove the ExpressCard from your PCMCIA adapter and you have a fully functional ExpressCard.
The ExpressCard is a little shorter than PCMCIA Cards.

| I was just getting ready to post a question asking if these adapters existed. Great thread. Does the adapter allow full utilization of the ExpressCard architecture? Or will there be performance hits? |

I need an adapter for the express slot that will connect to my old S620.
Socket made a pc card adapter that plugged into my motorola or was it Samsung phone years ago. I may still have it somewhere.
Now if they would see the market and made the little adapter to big card concept... |

(ExpressCards are not even available)
More info posted to this thread as it becomes available. | Hey Michael, I just received an email from JiWire.com this week and it appears that expresscards just became available June 27 from Dell for Verizon. Great site, BTW. EVDOForums has become one of my regular posting sites:
Dell Releases First EV-DO ExpressCard
By Sascha Segan
The first ExpressCard for Verizon's high-speed EV-DO network is here, and it's sold by Dell.
The new ExpressCard standard has replaced PC Cards in a slew of new laptops, including entries from Dell, Lenovo, HP, and Apple. But up until now, laptop owners have been frustrated by a lack of cards for their slots, especially cards that connect to cellular networks to provide Internet access anywhere.
In April, Novatel Wireless announced the XV620, an ExpressCard for high-speed EV-DO networks that was being evaluated by Verizon and Sprint. That was followed up on June 22 with the announcement of the XU870, a card for Cingular's HSDPA high-speed network that would also allow global roaming.
But the XV620 has been stalled in Verizon's and Sprint's approval processes for several months now. The XU870 for Cingular will go on sale sometime before October, according to Novatel Wireless.
Dell will sell the Dell Wireless 5700 Mobile Broadband ExpressCard for $179 through their online Software and Peripherals store by the end of this week, according to company spokeswoman Anne Camden. The card will come with 30 days of Verizon service; after that, you'll have to pay $59.99/month if you have a Verizon voice plan, or $79.99/month if you don't.
When I tested the XV620, I found it to have excellent performance, matching the current Editors' Choice, the Kyocera KPC650 PC Card. The card comes with a new version of the Dell Mobile Broadband Utility, and has only been tested with Dell laptops, but should work with other laptops with the appropriate drivers; we'll find out more when we get a card in for testing. There's no word on Mac drivers from Dell, which makes perfect sense as, after all, they don't make Macs.
I'll get a card in soon and test its performance.

Dell released an initial batch of them, and we even got one on July 5th, the are currently at a 2 week lead time, if you order today.
We will be conducting our own benchmarks and posting them up on EVDOinfo.com & EVDOforums.com.
Search on EVDOinfo / EVDOforums, for lots more info on the Dell Wireless 5700 ExpressCard . _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I saw this picture on the first post and it look like the one on my new Latitude D620 manual.
Is there a disadvantage to using a adapter on a PCMCIA slot? |

If an ExpressCard to PCMCIA "caddy" did exist it would provide a lot of flexibility, because it would allow you to use an ExpressCard EVDO card in computers with only PCMCIA slots (assuming there were no driver issues asssociated with the adaptor itself).
Micheal, are you also thinking this would allow an ExpressCard to be used with the Kyocera KR-1 router? |

Yes, an Expresscard Caddy (or ExpressCard PCMCIA adapter) would give an upgrade path to many laptop users who may be upgrading laptops over the next 12 to 24 months. No need to buy a new card when you upgrade your laptop, just remove the ExpressCard Caddy and you have an ExpressCard for your new laptop.
Regarding the KR1, we will have to wait and see. If the Novatel V640 is completely API compatible with the Novatel V620, then it would work in the current firmware of the KR1. If it isn't "seen" as a V620, drivers would need to be added to the Kyocera KR1. However, Kyocera moves slow in this area. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

In case no one has figured it out, these new modems should be USB to the
Expresscard/34 interface. The only thing that may be a concearn is the standard
calls for 3.3V and 1.5V plus some low level handshaking that could be done
with a simple microcontroller. Essentially you'll be able to plug this eventually
into a USB adapter and use it once someone reads up enough on the handshake
that is involved. I doubt the 5.00 Volts DC at 500 mAmps will be enough to power
the cards, so you also likely need an external power source like a battery.
Pages 44 and 45 of this document have the pinouts for ExpressCard/34.

Whitebengal, I see what you're talking about. Perhaps the modems only use the USB portion of th ExpressCard/34 interface, not the PCI Express portion.
A USB to PCI-Express adaptor would also allow the modem to be used on a wider range of computers (Like the MacBook which has neither an ExpressCard nor a PCMCIA slot.) It also means that no additional drivers would be needed if the ExpressCard modem actually appears as a USB device.
When the ExpressCard/34 modems are available, someone should check to see if they are being seen by the system purely as USB devices. |

| I just tried the adapter with a Dell 5700 in the KR1 and it did not work. |
