Looks like there is a lot of activity on the ExpressCard front today (finally).

Dell has announced them (not yet available on their web site).

Verizon has started shipping the Novatel XV620 to their warehouses (we should have them next week). This is great news for all those waiting many many months for an ExpressCard solution.

Dell Notebook Computers Can Subscibe to Verizon Wireless BroadbandAccess Service With Dell Wireless 5700 Mobile Broadband ExpressCard

ROUND ROCK, Texas, June 27, 2006 –Mobile users now have a new option to access the Internet on the Verizon Wireless network with Dell’s Wireless 5700 Mobile Broadband ExpressCard™.

The new offering enables broadband connectivity on most Dell notebook computers via Verizon Wireless’s BroadbandAccess service.1
Delivering on the goal to provide the best technology experience possible, Dell is the first major notebook supplier to offer an ExpressCard solution for mobile broadband connectivity, something a growing number of notebook customers are requesting.

ExpressCard technology is a standard created by a broad coalition of PCMCIA trade association members, including Dell. The ExpressCard standard helps deliver thinner, faster and lighter modular expansion for notebook computer users. All new Dell Inspiron™ and XPS™ notebooks and select Latitude™ notebooks and Dell Precision™ Mobile workstations include ExpressCard slots. Customers can order an adapter that facilitates using the Dell Wireless 5700 ExpressCard on notebook computers designed with a PC Card slot.

So will there be any difference between the Dell model and the Verizon model? Would the software be different? Would there be any advantage to purchasing one over the other?

Don't know the answer to that question today. We have Verizon ExpressCards coming in next week. When I ordered a Dell version tonight, they indicated 1-2 weeks before delivery.

After we get both in, we will determine the differences and post here.

It states that there is an adapter for PC card slot users, but I could not find that on Dell.com. Maybe I'm not searching correctly, but is there such a thing that exists?

My goal is to use this Express card on my Kyocera KR1 router as well by using the adapter.

We heard a few months ago about a Novatel ExpressCard Caddy , which would convert an ExpressCard into a PCMCIA card.

We will post more info after we confirm it is available and after we get one.

BTW, the adapter that Dell is offering appears to be an ExpressCard/34 to ExpressCard/54 adapter, or a way to use the ExpressCard/34 in laptops that have the larger ExpressCard/54 size.

More info at:

ExpressCard/34 & ExpressCard/54 For EVDO

Looks like we will also be getting our "Dell" ExpressCard today, before the Verizon labeled one.

We will providing pictures, reviews, and lots more information later today (including what exactly is included in the packaging - we are assuming a 54mm adapter - more later today).

Got the Dell ExpressCard/34.

For those needing a 54mm Adapter, it is not included with the ExpressCard/34.

Here is what you get:

The Dell Wireless 5700 ExpressCard doesn't use VZAccess, it does use a different connection manager, called the Dell Mobile Broadband Card Utility, that looks like this:

The label on the back indicates that this card is a Novatel V640. This card is having problems working on MacBook Pros, lets see what happens when we get drivers for the Verizon XV620 card, and see if the Dell Card is recognized or not.

Michael:
Do you have Boot Camp on your MacBook Pro? If so, did you try the Dell 5700 card on the Windows partition of Boot Camp? Did it work?

Yes, the Dell 5700 works if you boot your MacBook Pro under BootCamp.

There is a thread on this topic at:

I noticed from the photo that the FCCID indicates the card is an XV620. Is the V640 designation perhaps a mislabel?
