The Sprint Power Vision network uses a 3G (third-generation) technology called EvDO (Evolution-Data Optimized) and covers more than 150 million people in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, according to the company. The network will expand to cover an estimated 190 million people by the end of this year, Sprint Nextel said this week.
In the first quarter of next year, EvDO Revision A will reach about 214 million people, Sprint Nextel said. By the end of the third quarter of 2007, the overlay will be rolled out across the whole Sprint Power Vision network and will reach about 220 million people.
[Other reports say Rev A to hit 100% of voice network by end of 2007 (250m) and expand cellsites by 40% by 2008 to 268m.]
Verizon Wireless reaches more than 150 million people around the country with its EvDO network, according to spokesman Jeffrey Nelson. Verizon also plans to roll out EvDO Revision A, Nelson said, but he would not give a target date for rollout.
Cingular Wireless, a joint venture of AT&T and BellSouth, said last month it was using UMTS HSDPA (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System High Speed Downlink Packet Access) in 16 major metropolitan areas and would expand that coverage to most major U.S. metropolitan areas this year. |

| SSssssoooo, based on their new roll-out, and the fact that their client software will allow locking in EVDO specifically, would you think it would be better to chuck my Verizon contract, and go with Sprint? |

Then I would say go for it. Sprint would not be ready with EVDO rev A until the end of 2007 at the latest. _________________ EVDO Addict. |

Actually, I still have nine days on the trial period with Verizon, and I guess if Sprint isn't going to be up and running until '07(should probably stop here and read, huh, Michael? )I'll try to make Verizon work. Still wish I could find a manager that'll let me isolate EVDO so I quit bouncin'. |

^Just to clarify, Sprint is up an running with EVDO Rev 0 but Rev A is coming broadly next year with likely some test markets end of this year, ditto for Verizon. Sprint has EVDO in more markets than Verizon and Sprint can lock the card into EVDO. You also might want to take a close look at Verizon's terms of service...

Not true, Sprint's evdo Rev A laptop cards are coming out 3q 2006.
I stopped down at my Verizon store and the rep there said they expect Rev A to be out in Verizon in THREE months!
Everything's moving faster than previous estimates because of competition. First, Sprint created competition for Verizon by getting its first gen evdo act together last year...now Cingular is creating competition for the other two together by getting their HSDPA act together last year and this year.
Now they're all slugging it out and trying to be first to market with the next best thing.

I would expect both Sprint and Verizon to get one or two announced markets up and running by Q3 as a pilot (one will probably have bragging rights for a few weeks). They'll both continue adding Rev A on towers and we'll see unofficial access to many towers but markets won't be officially announced until entire market is complete.
Sprint will officially launch to Business first early next year with an ad campaign. Then later when Rev A phones become available Sprint will 'officially' launch to consumers later in the year. But to us early adopters who buy a Rev A card in Q3, we'll likely be able to use it as towers are in testing, well before the official business/consumer launches. But it will depend on where they start/finish the rollout.
Don't know how Verizon will do this but this is how it happened when Sprint did Rev 0. We were using Rev 0 as early as last April, 6 months before the market was officially announced. |

Competition is grand, we all will win.
Sprint's announcements are awesome, BUT they are just announcements. Verizon made the decision to go with EVDO way before Sprint, so Verizon "won" that first "battle" and they beat Sprint. Sprint is trying to win the next battle. Keeping in mind, their announcements are just that, announcements. You cannot call us and order any of it, you cannot walk into your Sprint store and order any of it.
Sprint takes the risk of losing some customers and gaining some customers.
They can lose some customers because some who think all this stuff is almost available and they may decide to wait, instead of purchasing now. They may have to wait a full year and perhaps until the end of 2007 before they can really use EVDO Rev A. So, hopefully those people figure out that this stuff is not around the corner and if they want to get the benefits of EVDO, they will make the plunge now and then later worry about the newest stuff. However, the other concern for others, "Should I lock in to a 2 year agreement now?". How much more is it going to cost me later to upgrade to a new EVDO Rev A card, when it makes sense to do?
Sprint may also gain new customers. Those that look at these announcement and understand. They will say, "Wow, these will not be available for some time, but at least I know that Sprint is moving in the direction of deploying these new things".
I also wouldn't count out Verizon. Lets see what they do in this area.
Also, keep in mind that Actions Speak Louder Then Words. Lets see what the future holds.
Indications are that Verizon will be releasing all this same stuff too (in probably the same time frames).
If I were Verizon or Sprint. I would be putting LOTS of effort into getting ONE major city OR major airports on EVDO Rev A First. The company that actually delivers EVDO Rev A first, will be the real winner. So here is the score card so far:
- First to Announce EVDO Rev 0: Verizon
- First to Deploy EVDO Rev 0: Verizon
- First to Announce EVDO Rev A: Sprint
Now, here are the next battles in reality and mindshare:
- First to sell EVDO Rev A Cards? Sprint - Aug 2006
- First to announce a city (big one) or airports that have EVDO Rev A?
BTW, here are a few other battles that will happen first:
- First to have an ExpressCard solution? Verizon - Aug 2006
- First to have an ExpressCard solution for Mac OS X? Verizon - Aug 2006
- First to have a USB EVDO Device? Sprint
As consumers and users of this awesome technology, we all win! So, lets sit back and enjoy the race _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier

I agree with the "we all win" stand point but it really comes down to your own market. As of now Sprint is available in more smaller towns and cities while Verizon has been slow to expand into anything other than the larger urban markets. Sprint also announced future rev 0 coverage areas first which it just so happens covers most places I will be using EVDO.
In KY, PA, TN amd some areas of VA where I frequent Sprint's current service area is better than Verizon's, especially in KY where Verizon only has coverage in Louisville while Sprint has current rev 0 service in Lexington, Louisville, Frankfort and Versailles. It's all about who gets to the areas that you will use EVDO. From my prespective Sprint gained incentive by marking areas for future use now instead of waiting and the user having to guess. If it ended up that Verizon came out in all the areas I would need coverage well ahead of Sprint then I would eat the $150 contract buy out without more than a few curse words and switch.
Either way the competition is great and it would be even better if Cinguliar would bring their service to more markets faster. |

It is my understanding that in many markets, Verizon does not have sufficient spectrum to fully deploy EVDO, whereas Sprint is in a much better position... |
