Verizon Pay-as-you-go Plan

Has anyone tried the Verizon pay-as-you-go option ($15 per day rather than an ongoing monthly fee, but available only for laptops with an embedded Verizon EvDO device)? Since I don't need a permanent wireless data plan, I'm interested in exactly how you register for the by-the-day service and how long it takes to activate it.

That is only $450/month, cheaper to get the $59.99 or $79.99/month plan.

However, for someone that just needs it a day or two every few months - it isn't a bad solution.

I cannot find it on Verizon's website either, but I have seen mention of this plan in two or three places, including the following:

It would be nice to verify that this is really an option since this is the main reason I am considering a Thinkpad T60. Of course, it's far more expensive than a monthly plan if you intend to use it every day, but much less expensive if you only need it a few days a year (for an occasional trip or problem with your cable or phone modem).

Novel idea, but I think their price point is off. Should be more like $7.50 to $10 a day. This is cheap enough for those who don't need constant connectivity and low enough that if your daily internet access is less than 50% of the business month, it's worth using this option.

Right now, it takes only 4 days to make this option totally pointless.

At the $7.50 price point, I can at least see a lot more people using this option and Verizon actually making more money over all than at the $15 price point.

Although, maybe Verizon actually did some sort of market research and maybe the $15/day price point is the sweet spot, who knows.

$15 a day? that's kind of expensive. but then again, i've paid more for 24 hour service in London with T-Mobile. i think i paid $12 for 5 hours at O'Hare for wireless and i wasn't happy about it, but when you have no other choice and you really need to get online, what else can you do?

Verizon knows they have you by the balls and they'll take advantage of that as much as possible.

I think Verizon simply wanted to make it too expensive on a daily basis for someone who may be leaning toward signing up permanently vs. a la carte. In other words, they want the consumer to merely try it and decide, not make it a permanent option to use it 10 days a month. If the service were say $7.99 a day, it would be take 10 days for a person to be in the monthly service price range before it would make sense to upgrade to a full contract.

I guess Verizon saw this would cut into its monthly subscriber business which is exactly why they implemented this program in the first place, to get you try before you buy, get you hooked, and have you sign up. I do think they should offer an incentive to those with built in WWAN modems who try the service (credit any days toward activation or first month service?) I suspect with T-Mobile charging in the upwards of $10/day for hotspots where you have to be in a hotspot zone to use it, $15 for Verizon broadband practically anywhere is not that far off.
