Please take a look at this article.

It sounds like AirCell, is doing this:

- pointing 125 EVDO antennas across the country towards the sky
- sounds like the specs are EVDO Rev A (3.1mb is Rev A, 2.4mb is EVDO Rev 0)
- Airplanes in North America will be able to use this service
- On the plane will be an Access Point (AP), that allows WiFi users on the airplane to access the internet

Sounds like Boeing Connexion and Airbus' OnAir use satellite to plane technology (which is more expensive).

Anyone know more about AirCell and their plans??

Looks like AirCell has completed a demonstration of this technology. From what have learned, it looks like AirCell is aiming EVDO antennas on the ground toward the sky. The Airplanes have a receiver and then they rebroadcast the EVDO signal over WiFi.

Looks like this service is finally coming in 2008.

Quote:
Gogo in-air Internet brings WiFi while in-flight

Gogo, which was developed by AirCell will allow browsing, emailing, instant messaging in flight over a modified version of a EVDO Rev A connection that is aimed to the skies. A router on board will convert the air based EVDO signal to WiFI (just like current routers do now). This uses the same technology that Verizon/Sprint are currently using, BUT it does not use their towers. These towers are placed across the country and are aimed at the skies. There will be roughly 125 EVDO antennas across the country aimed upwards.

Gogo is launching in 2008 on select flights on American Airlines and Virgin America. Many people that use EVDO that travel will benefit from Gogo.

At launch internet access will be available on:

* San Francisco - JFK
* LAX - JFK
* San Diego - San Francisco
* LAX - Seattle
* San Francisco - Las Vegas

The cost is estimated to add $13 per trip for longer tips and $10 if your flight is less than three hours.
