This is a pretty cool device but if it's intended for US use then it would likely be Verizon. Why does it need a SIM slot since only GSRM uses SIM?

According to the manufacturer, the SIM slot may be removed for markets that do not require it (e.g. Verizon or Sprint in the US).

The RUIM or Removable Universal Identity Module (SIM) it mostly used in Asia.

The new USB EVDO Card described in this forum may be good news for all those Macintosh Powerbook G4 12" and iBook owners who cannot use the PCMCIA cards. This will be good news if the manufacturer provides Macintosh drivers in addition to the Windows drivers already in developement. Lets keep our fingers crossed. Very Happy

Even if the manufacturer doesn't create the driver, I'll bet that some other company/individual will Smile

For this to work with Verizon in the US it would seem Verizon would have to be willing to program the modem for the owner. They get dicey about that with unapproved devices so I wonder how that will work.

Maybe (at some point), it will become an 'approved' device?

I just called Falcom and spoke with Haig Boyd and he told me that this USB evDO modem could be shipping by the end of THIS month, June 2005, in about 10 days.

However, when I asked him, would I be able to take his product down to a Verizon Wireless office and have them provision my Sony U750 on to the Verizon Wireless BroadBand Access evDO network, he didn't know.

He asked me to put the question in an email and that he would get me an answer.

So now I'm waiting for that...I'll let the board know what I hear when I hear it.

That is the same contact I have at Falcom, I also just sent him a reminder about sending us a demo unit. I will try to do the same with getting it to work with Verizon and report what I find here.

http://www.sierrawireless.com/news/mar-14a-05.asp

Sierra Wireless is developing this jointly with Falcom. Well, as many of you know, Sierra Wireless makes many of the PCMCIA cards used on the Verizon Wireless network!

This *has* to be almost immediately available if not immediately available on the Verizon BroadBandAccess network.

Why?

Because Verizon has the only evDO network in the USA right now!

Sprint only has one or two or three test cities at most right now. They won't be hardly turned on at all until 2006.

Cingular is on another standard-GPRS/Edge, migrating to UTMS.

There *ain't* anybody other than Verizon that can use this device.

And I can't imagine that Sierra and Falcom is planning on selling these devices to NO market.

I hate to get my hopes up, for fear of having them cruelly dashed as this emerging mobile marketplace is so apt to do at this point, but sheer logic seems to indicate that if we can really start buying this thing in 10 days or so, surely I can take this thing down to Verizon and have them provision my Sony U750P onto their BroadBandAccess network using this little Samba plugged into the Sony U750P USB port.

Otherwise, for who and what is Sierra and Falcom building this thing for anyways???!!!

Fingers crossed....

Smile

...if this thing comes out in 10 days or so and we individually go down to our Verizon Wireless offices and they refuse to provision us because it's not an "approved" device, here's what we oughtta do...

...organize a teleconference call and then have the leader of the conference call 3-way one of the 3rd level tech support people on to the call (I have the main number and the names and extension numbers of many of the higher ups) and give them a friggin' earful about meeting their customers NEEDS...NOW!

Want grease? squeak like a wheel!
