http://www.sierrawireless.com/news/mar-14a-05.asp

I emailed the same Shane that is listed as an official Falcom contact at the end of the Sierra Wireless public March 14th news release linked above.

Here's his reply to my original question below:

Shane,

my question is simple: when you begin selling your Samba USB evDO modem in 10 days or so (or whenever it comes out), will I be able to take your Samba, plug it into the USB port of my

Sony U750P

and take my Sony U750P down to my local Verizon Wireless office and get the Sony U750P and your Samba *together* successfully “provisioned” on the Verizon Wireless evDO-based BroadBandAccess network?

???

John Lester

PS Myself and handtop users all around the USA await your answer with fear and trembling…and hope… J

Look at what Shane said next:

OK then,
Therefore follow the next public news release from Sierra Wireless coming soon for the availability of SAMBA 3G. It's coming soon. You will be able to buy them from Verizon or Sprint. We cannot sell any product before they are approved on their networks.
Please spread the news also that EDGE version of SAMBA is coming too on Cingular and T-Mobile networks with Quad band GSM/GPRS and EDGE.
Please send your email and inquiries from now on to: info@FalcomUSA.com

Thanks
Shane

It’s there for the whole planet to see in the March 14th public news release at the Sierra Wireless website, Shane.

I’m a potential customer of yours and already a customer of Sony’s and Verizon’s as you see below. Plus a frequent poster to various leading tech blogs.

PS I’m wondering why there hasn’t been a peep out of Verizon regarding this. They almost always “tease” forthcoming products/services not a few weeks before they’re actually released. Everyone out here wants to believe that you’re setup with Verizon but we’ve been waiting for so long (with NO hope) that this really sounds too good to be true and the natural human inclination is to doubt the good news. One person on one board just postulated today that you’re just making this product for Australia (where they have evDO and a competing Telstra MiniMax product) and that we’ll still be out of luck. That’s how demoralized people who have been lacking your product have become regarding this issue.

a) I would strongly, but nicely, suggest not including email addresses (especially 'work' email addresses) in posts to a public forum. Partly out of privacy (see b. below) but also because spambots are very good at harvesting email addresses from web forums.

b) Especially if you haven't asked the person who uses that email address.

c) Super especially if they've been a friendly contact to yourself and others who depend on the good graces of the contact. Smile

Note: I'm posting this just as a suggestion, not to get into an argument. Smile

And finally: sounds like great news!

Was wondering if this will have Mac support out of the box, and whether it'll work on Sprint's network?

Thanks,
Peter

I agree that it is not appropriate to post a private email to a public forum with email addresses, the email addresses have been removed in the previous posts.

Unknown at this time.

Falcom has promised to send a demo unit to us in 2-3 weeks, so we may know more later.

I just spoke with Haig at Falcom and he said that with regards to the Falcom Samba *evDO* device, there's been some "driver issues" that apparently will delay release of the device to later this summer and possibly as late as September.

*sigh*

Does anyone know the estimated price this will be release at?

Also, how can I get my hands on a demo?

Y'all hear me!

$500...or MORE!

Godslammit, just get the thing into PRODUCTION! Small device owners have been waiting LONG ENOUGH for mobile broadband...

*stomps foot*

I sent an email to get any updates or news. I referred them to this thread, so they can see there is some interest. So, if you are interested, post hear, so that the manufacturer can see there is a demand for their product!

>>>Point them over to handtops.com. Let THEM go over and post and ask them how many people would be willing to pay

SERIOUS BUCKS TODAY

for their product.

They'll think they got run over by a steamroller or wiped out by a rushing mob of teeny boppers trying to get into a M&M concert...

...if Falcom could assure people that even ONE (1) Falcom Samba evdo USB modem would WORK with the Verizon BroadBandAccess network or Sprint's evdo network that they are finally starting to rollout, and if Falcom took that only ONE (1) Falcom Samba unit in the world and put it up on eBay, I have absolutely

NO DOUBT

that it would go for $5,000, $10,000 or MORE.

I wouldn't pay THAT much...but there would be somebody else that WOULD.

I'm a marketing consultant. Tell them they need to listen to me...they have an opportunity to be FIRST to market but if they dawdle much longer they're going to BLOW IT because someone else will come in and do a similar USB type of evdo modem OR will find another way to pipe full evdo wirelessly (instead of bluetooth which cuts the speed more than half and don't even talk to me about usb cables...yech) into small handtop types of devices outside of the usb pathway. For example, someone may figure out soon how to squeeze a pcmcia card into a handtop device, who knows. Or something like that just flat out different than a usb wireless modem dongle like Samba. I know that I am looking for a Samba REPLACEMENT all the time, every day that I have to wait. And many others are too...and a lot of us stay constantly connected...so news will spread fast as to who the WINNER is gong to be for all of this frustrated, pent up demand...
