Posted: Mon Feb 13, 2006 2:29 pm Post subject: KR1 & PC5740 Slowdown - RESOLVED |
|
|
In our testing, the KR1 was getting similar speeds compared to having the card inserted in the laptop. The PC5740 never worked with the KR1, until one of the latest pre-production firmware releases.
We had someone report, that using a Verizon PC5740, the speed was around 30% - 50% less compared to speeds that the laptop was getting. PC5740 in KR1 is getting 300Kbps (or so), same card, same location in laptop, getting 500Kbps - 600Kbps.
According to log files in the KR1, the PC5740 keeps reloading the USB driver over and over again, and this is probably related to the slowdown.
Anyone else with a PC5740 see this issue?
Starting with Firmware RK1006 (released 7/19/2006), Kyocera now supports the PC5740 - this issue is now resolved
In celebration of this, we are offering an additional $20 off the KR1 purchased 7/20/2006 - 7/31/2006. Enter coupon code of "rk1006" and you will receive an additional $20 off at time of purchase

|
|
Hey Michael,
There any eta to this getting fixed?
This is keeping me from buying one (I've got that card).
I'm not eager to buy a unit, then find out that the card won't be supported if the two companies want to point fingers at each other rather than fix the problem.
Is the PC5740 Supposed to be officially supported, or does it just happen to kinda work?
thanks! |

I don't have an ETA when this will be fixed, perhaps Mackieman can comment.
I haven't heard of any finger pointing at all, in fact, the reps from Kyocera have been outstanding at answering questions up here.
Yes, the PC5740 is supposed to be one of the cards that is supported.
Watch this thread and when a firmware update is released, it will be posted to this thread. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Michael,
Thanks for your help with this issue. Is there anyone at Kyocera that I can e-mail in reference to this problem. These slow speeds are killing me. I love having a rolling hot spot in my car, but 300kbs isn't what I had in mind when I purchased the router.

I feel the same way! If the PC5740 is NOT the best Verizon card to use,
then what is the best ??????

According to the Kyocera Web Site:
| Quote: | Compatible with the following 32 bit 1xEV-DO PC Cards:
Kyocera KPC650, Sierra AC580, Novatel 620 |
I have also personally tested the PC5220 and that works fine. The only card that has problems is the PC5740. If you read some of the older threads on EVDOforums, the PC5740 was not supported in pre-production models, and was added in one of the last firmwares. Since, it is not officially listed, AND there are some known problems, it would be smart to wait for a future firmware to support it, OR get a card that is supported. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

I understand that the PC5740 is not supported.
Does anyone know if there are plans to support it in the future (and thus fix the slow-down bug)? I ask because...just my luck, that's the card I have. I thought I read somewhere that just about every card works with the KR1, so I went with it instead of checking more (stupid me, I know).
I read the recommendation to not order the KR1 AFTER I ordered it (doh). I'm reluctant to "jump out of line" if there is hope it will be fixed. Slower performance at this time is better than no performance at all and I'm really fed up with satellite Internet service - I can't do anything I NEED to do such as VPN for work. |

I don't know if I can help - I would need an activated card for a few days, but really DLink or Kyocera might need to alter the kernel, but I might be able to do some kind of workaround (e.g. killing khubd after a connect).
(In effect, using top or something to figure out what is creating the extra effort, and making it stop - it won't fix the root cause, but will make the system work).
If Mike has an activated card, and a KR1 with COM1 attached or one of my recent firmware releases so he can telnet to it, he can try it (killall khubd, or use "ps" to get the number or the khubd process, and do kill -9 number). |

Kyocera/DLink added support for the PC5740 (late in the development). It is not listed as "supported". They have mentioned that they will fix the problems. I am not sure when. It might even be fixed by the time they get the next large shipment in. Mackieman, any ideas? _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| It should be implemented in the next firmware release. It and several other things (both fixes and feature additions) will be nice to have. |

<Mr. Burns> Excellent. </Mr. Burns>
I was reading a howto to get the pc5740 to work with linux, but I'm not in the mood to jump through those hoops every time I update the kernel, so the KR1 is just about as perfect as I can imagine.
Now I just need to get sales to change my order to 2-day shipping instead of ground. |

I have a firmware build in test right now that reportedly fixes this problem. The issue is that card is in my office in San Diego and I am in Las Vegas for CTIA. So we'll see on Friday when I get back. |
