UPDATE: This problem has been fixed. See this thread for a Verizon engineer's response and repair!

I've had EVDO for a few months now, and it's been working well but for the past few weeks, right around 4:30 PM to about 10:30 PM, the bandwidth just gets atrocious. I've confirmed that some other people in my area are having the same problem at a local users group.

Obviously, Verizon oversold in this area and their infrastructure can't take it. This has been going on for a few weeks now with no end in sight.

When I originally signed up and got the card fully working, I saw 900, 1100 kbps. Now during the morning it's around 600, and it drops all the way to about 100 during prime time. It also gets bursty around 5:30 - 7.

Hello I am a Verizon Wireless RF Engineer and I am responsible for Boulder market. I would appreciate if the user can give me cross streets so I can go check what is actually happening in the field. The statistics do not give an indication that we have a problem with slower throughput. I would like to resolve an issue if there is one.

Laughing Wow, way cool. Monitoring boards like this always seemed smart to me, but never figured Verizon actually did it. Good job.

first- very cool of a VZW engineer to be responding to a board in this way- two thumbs way up for customer service...

but I'm wondering if, since there's no direct indication of a congestion issue in the network, perhaps it's an issue with the Venturi acceleration servers? If the feature is turned on, and the servers get busy at times, you could see this behavior as well..

this isn't based on actual experience with VZaccess, or the Ventrui servers, just my experience with networks and servers in general (I'm a network engineer with a server background)

you can shut it off temporarily to test this- right click on the VZaccess icon on the taskbar, then select preferences- then there's a Venturi tab..

I see everyone voted that they have seen a decrease in throughput during busier hours but can someone give me some cross streets please.

Wow, great! The streets are Osage and Thunderbird -- 4905 Osage to be specific. Thanks for looking into it! I have 3/4 bars of signal strength, for what it's worth.

According to this, Boulder only has 800mhz Verizon towers. This may explain why EVDO is slow in that market as 800mhz does not have much capacity for EVDO as 1900mhz towers. I'm not certain but it is speculated that EVDO on 800mhz towers runs at a lower priority than voice, which may explain why EVDO is slower during peak voice hours.

Would be interesting to hear the cellsite techs response to that.

Some on the San Jose area have also pointed out slower performance during rush hour. Guess what, no 1900mhz towers in that area.

I'll take that as an indication that the speculation is more likely correct than incorrect. It does seem reasonable to be the case. Would be interesting to hear details though on how EVDO works out on 800mhz towers.

My guess is that it's not purely an 800 vs 1900 mhz issue. The reason is that when I first got the service set up, at home I was getting very fast speeds and those seem to have simply declined, especially during prime time. Hence my speculation about overselling.

The Boulder issue should be fixed starting 11:20 AM. We found a RF issue and it is resolved. As far as the speculation for 800 to 1900 it is incorrect. I was putting too much technical info here than I would like to. Therefore I withdrew some of my comments. I appreciated you pointing us out a problem in boulder area close to hwy 157. This should be fixed now. Please let me know if you see any more issues. I will more than happy to resolve them.

I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to the Verizon Wireless technicians that are not only monitoring EVDOforums, BUT also solving problems for people having problems.

Wow, thank you and everyone up here thanks to you too.
