The KR1 is WiFi certified... so unless the Slingbox uses some strange protocols that the WiFi stack (or LAN switch) can't pass, your only limitiation would be bandwidth, and at 213kbps that shouldn't be an issue.

(ps- boater805... you seeing broadband speeds today? here in downtown ventura and only getting national access... no faster. too much EVDO use on the 101?)

I'm down in Long Beach today so don't know how Ventura is doing. Heard there was a lot of hail up there yesterday so maybe some damage to the towers? I usually get 1.1 to 1.2 Mbps thruout Ventura.

I have seen it mentioned here several times that some sort of signal strength indicator might be coming via firmware update ...

Is there any known or guess timeframe as to when the first firmware upgrade might be coming out ?

Thanks

The first/next Firmware upgrade is not going to add any new features.

GPSD is partially there - gpsmux works, gpsd 2.0 is a bit too much of a pig, and I'm waiting for a list of minimal gpsd support - what commands are actually used or which version so I can rip out the unneeded stuff and replace floating point with integer math.

On the KPC650 the PRL list is a file which bitpim can access, and the original firmware was linking the diagnostic USB port over the diagnostic (serial as usb) port. This can be reenabled, or a virtual serial port could be used. If the PRL update is merely writing a new copy of this file, I might have been able to do it via bitpim.

If I have time I'm going to experiment to see if I can set up some virtual com ports under windows mapped to ports on the KR1 via tcp/ip and see if my activation sofware will find it.

http://www.brothersoft.com/software/hw_group_s._r._o._1.html

On this same diagnostic port used to access the filesystem comes the live signal strength, but I have to decode the protocol. I can do something with the LEDs or an alternate page to indicate the strength.

If I can ever get the kernel to compile (and figure out some more firmware magic), I can add the extra USB device support - printers and storage - the KR1 is a di624s with usb-storage and half of the samba server ripped out. Right now, I fixed the iPod charging problem by killing the process which recognizes if a phone is plugged in (though a hardware extension cable with the green and white wires cut might be equally effective).

Any confirmation (or speculation) as to (1) what specifically it will address and (2) when?

Something discussed earlier was USB printer support. This could be done via the phone port (and even with an existing phone via a hub). They could also turn USB storage back on (the KR1's software is a DI624S with the samba and usb storage half-removed).

Even the USB Serial support appears crippled and might only work with the specific phones. (The second USB port is an RS232 COM port but with USB hardware).

Linux has fairly good USB support, so the KR1 could have the capabilities very similar to any desktop if these could be added to the kernel or via modules. You could also do a USB network connector (or IrDA or Bluetooth) for WAN failover and/or load balancing. The Reaktek ethernet/wireless seems to be an internal hardware bridge, so WAN might be possible but would necessarily leak across the ports.

Signal Strength, PRL updates, and such might be done via a virtual serial port (like I'm doing with GPSD for some apps). I haven't gotten it to do anything with the control port on the KPC650 in the KR1 so far so there might be more USB limitations.

1) Make the KR1 actually work reliably in my environment, described in another topic. (Verizon V620, fringe of EV-DO area.)

2) Include connection type (EV-DO or 1xRTT) as well as signal strength in the signal strength screen.

3) Since the software can query the connection type, introduce a bias setting allowing me to instruct the modem to reject 1xRTT connections a configurable number of times before settling for 1xRTT.

Besides Michael's wish list, I'd like to see more extensive logging capabilities. Different log levels to produce more/less output. If I have log levels turned way up, spew as much detail, maybe even packet-level details, particularly those that get dropped. [*]

To reiterate, signal strength is a must have.

Printer sharing isn't as big a deal to me, right now anyway, but it sure would be a nice convenience.

Some of the documentation could be better, too. I don't think I was ever able to READ what a "red" status light meant. I deduced it meant there was no signal. (And better yet, log it in simple english!)

- Jeff

[*] Something like this would be interesting in trying to figure out why the %#^@&! I can't get a VPN connection through the KR1. That way I don't have to go out and get a packet sniffer to test what's happening with the KPC650 plugged into my laptop versus when it's plugged in to the KR1.

Note: my firmware allows for telnetting in so you can run other programs and tcpdump for the KR1 is up on my .mac public area. PM me if you need more info, but I think the pointers are somewhere in these fora.

Is the KR-1/gpsd to the point where we can buy a pre-configured KR-1 (with GPS) that will allow gps tracking using something like Google Earth?

Thanks!

KR1 will not support GPSd natively. You have to use a, "hacked" firmware that tz created. I have submitted it as a possible feature requirement for the next version of the product, though.

When you say "next version", do you mean via a firmware upgrade or complete hardware upgrade? tz has already proven that the GPSd can in fact run on the current platform.

Next version of the product means a complete product change; both hardware and software.

In the meantime, does Michael's company plan to offer such a package?

Thanks,
