Short story is this. It ain't perfect, but I got a Kyocera KPC650 running on a 667Mghz, 15"PB and it works pretty darn well, got 1800K over the card while on a PC. Full and proper credit goes to Mike. Usual disclaimers apply- Use at your own risk, please don't use the command line and play with these files if you don't know what the heck you are playing with, don't play with things you don't know how to fix and let others be the first off the side of the iceberg.
Using the basic outline of the directions for the NovaTel V620 and some changes for the Kyocera Card (Mike helped me via email). I was able to see and interact with the card but I failed authentication when I tried to connect. Confirming call to Verizon Tech guys confirmed that my card was not activated yet and therefore had no PRL and so on that it gets when it first joings the network. It also appears that manual dialers that could reach out and touch this card (once the plist changes are made) MIGHT be able to dial *22899 and get activated that way (trouble is, you have to just dial it- no password, no authentication, no PPP- just a simple "atdt *22899".)
So I went to my friendly neighborhood clients office and mooched a PC running W2K and installed the software. It activated and ran great in their box (it carried all my phone number setup from the MAC with it too). Then pop it out of the W2K box and into my laptop and its been going ever since. Occasionally get disconnects but here in Washington DC market with decent coverage, running 10.4 it works for my purposes. More on speed issues and other bugs later. Next up is to try sharing it with others on a train
Don't give up. |

In talking with MacGeek a few nights ago, his Kyocera KPC 650 didn't work with his PowerBook, UNTIL it was first activated in a PC.
We know why this is, and for those having problems with Novatel V620, this *may* be needed to get things to work. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

BTW, entering *22899 as the phone number (normally #777), may be all that is needed to activate the card. The cards that I have are already activated, so it is hard to tell if this is working.
I will research it a bit more. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| Something else you may want to confirm is the possibility of getting on the web by some other means and going to Verizon Wireless' website and seeing if you can activate it that way. My card is the only means that I have to connect to the Internet, so I have no way to test this theory. From the main page, Login and look under My Account | Activate Your Phone Online. This would be pretty cool if it worked for Mac and Linux users. I would think that you should be able to just plug in your card and have it powered up, just like a regular cell phone. |

There are 2 types of activation that need to occur:
1) Getting setup with Verizon. They get your ESN number of your card and tie it with a phone number. This happens, when you purchase your card from a Verizon dealer or agent. If you purchase your card from somewhere else (e.g. ebay), this does not happen.
2) Once you get your EVDO card, it needs to be activated to download the latest PRL. You cannot do this from the web site.
Step 2 is the stumbling block. I am trying to confirm if entering " *22899" instead of "#777" in the phone number is enough to get things activated on the Mac. On my PC Card, when I dial this, I lose connection for a few seconds and it appears the card is resetting. My card already has the latest PRL, so until there is a PRL updated, it may be hard to confirm this works. I am trying to get an unactivated EVDO card to confirm if this works. _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Then I type: which does as you say, resets the modem. On one instance, I had an older PRL prior and the new PRL after this sequence. So, I believe it does in fact, update the PRL. BTW, I used Windows and MCM to verify this. |

is anything reported back (e.g. 'OK') after it is successfully completed? | Unfortunately with Linux, no. Because when the card resets, it blows the Lucent USB hub driver and/or the USB serial driver out of whack. I don't get a kernel panic, but I do have to reboot.
When a new PRL is posted, let me know and I'll carefully document what happens with NetBSD. |
