If you are directly between a EVDO tower and 1xRTT tower, you can bounce back and forth between both towers and it can slow down your connection OR make your connection unusable.

One solution is to add a booster antenna, but that might help both signals, and it will not solve the problem.

Another way to solve it, is to have a directional (Yagi) antenna, which allows you to point your antenna at just one tower.

Now, there is another (easier) solution. Contact Verizon Wireless Data Tech Support and have them block NationalAccess on your account. (UPDATE - THIS DOES NOT WORK)

THIS IS NOT a good solution for mobile professionals, since if you are in a NationalAccess ONLY area, your card will not be able to connect. This is a good option for those in a fixed location, that are bouncing between BroadbandAccess and NationalAccess. If you are one of our customers, contact us first and we can tell you what to say to help expedite Verizon Wireless Data Tech Support implementation.

If anyone from Sprint knows if this option is available, please post here, OR contact me privately with more information.

Just got the following email:

Quote:
Hi Mike,

I saw your post re: bouncing between EVDO and 1xRTT on evdoforums.com. You inquired about an option for Sprint. Interestingly, I had this very same problem both in Las Vegas and in the Atlanta airport when traveling to CES this year. Even though the EVDO signal was reasonably strong, the card would grab a 1xRTT signal after only a few minutes of use. I contacted Sprint about the problem last Thursday. They told me there was nothing that could be done.

Interestingly, Sprint released updates to the software for the Sierra AC580 yesterday. That update includes the ability to toggle between three modes:

(1) Automatic (Default)
(2) EVDO Only
(3) 1xRTT Only

I’ve configured my card for EVDO only and it is working very well. Not only am I not accidentally grabbing a 1xRTT signal, but I’m showing stronger EVDO signals now. I don’t know if the improved signal is related to configuring it to ignore the 1xRTT towers or if it was related to the software/firmware update. Either way . . . the problem appears to be solved. And it doesn’t require you to contact Sprint and have your account modified – so it’s easy to switch if you are without EVDO coverage when on the road.

Tell your readers to update their software. They can find the setting under “Menu” > “Settings” > “Sprint PCS Vision – Sierra Wireless”. I had to close and reopen the connection manager to commit the change (before doing so it said I had no signal).

Hope this helps your readers.

I just checked with my Merlin S620 and it didn't have this feature - so it appears that this is currently only for Sierra AirCard 580. From my contacts at Sprint, I have heard you might be seeing this feature in their connection manager for all cards. This is an important feature to help users use EVDO, who otherwise would have to cancel or look to the "other provider".

Way To Go Sprint!

For PC Users using a PC5220 on Verizon's Network, this option (the debug mode) has been there for the last few years:

http://www.EVDOinfo.com/Tips/PC_5220/Sniffing_Out_New_EVDO_Towers_with_a_PC5220_20050531297/

Hopefully, Verizon and Sprint will support this feature on all their current EVDO cards. It really can make a difference between customers canceling and happy customers.

Here is some additional information on the topic:

Quote:
The Novatel S620 won't have this feature. With the Sierra Wireless AC580, problems were due to the Qualcomm chipset; the option in ConnMgr was added as an afterthought by Sierra Wireless. The Novatel never experienced the ping-pong effect due to a different Qualcomm chipset.

^I was thinking there were some users on here who have reported ping-pong with the Novatel card. I personally have not seen it with my S620. Maybe it was with Sierra users only?

Here, here! I have the V620 and some days I can VPN in all day and stay on Broadband. But then there are days like today where it continues to fall back to NA and with my VPN maintaining a continuous connection it will NEVER go back to BA unless I close VPN session and either disconnect or wait for it to go dormant. A real PITA

This will be if not the top, then certainly in the top three reasons why I'll be moving to DSL once it comes available to me.

This doesn't make any sense? All the cards use the MSM-6500 chipset or am I missing the boat here?

^Yeah, the Merlin and Sierra cards use the same chipsets. Either he was full of it or there are different revisions of that chipset model.

The response I quoted was from a tech person at Sprint - now that everyone mentions it, I would think that any device with the same chipset would have the same problem.

If anyone from Sprint/Verizon cares to comment - or send me a private message to share that I can share with the forum.

I am on Sprint with an S620 and bounce back and forth all the time. I have a yagi and it is pointed at my nearest EVDO tower that is a tick over 5 miles. My 1xRTT tower is a little over a mile. It seems to go to 1x when the trees are saturated with rain and the connection is under heavy load. The only way it will come back to EVDO is to disconnect, wait a min and then reconnect. PITA! I hate it.

Here is a response from our tech contact at Sprint - hopefully, this clears things up.

Quote:
The Sierra Wireless AC580 has the MSM5500 chipset, while the Novatel Merlin S620 has the MSM6500 chipset. Primary difference(s) between the two (prior to the firmware upgrade): MSM6500 (Novatel) has three (3) criteria when making the determination to hand up/hand down between 1xRTT and EVDO, while MSM5500 (Sierra Wireless) only had one (1).

Sorry it doesn't clear things up:

Where is the MSM-5500 for EVDO Base Stations???

good news EVDOforums.com readers, we now have support from Sprint. They will be occasionally be sending me replies to specific forum threads. As we get answers to specific posts here, we will post the info.

Response From Sprint

Quote:
We are updating the Novatel Connection Manager to support the DO, Hybrid, or 1xRTT only modes. SW version is already out. Novatel should be on the auto-update server sometime next week and posted on the download part of the website sometime soon after that. Should see another small throughput increase when in DO only mode since in Hybrid mode the device will stop and check the 1xRTT network every 5 seconds or so. Bottom line, we are trying to give more controls over to the user so they can “hop-up” their user experience to meet their specific needs.

That is great news. Unfortunately the auto-update feature has never worked in any version of the connection manager I have tried in the last 6 months. I either get "You have the latest version" or "You are not connected to the internet or there is a problem with the Software Updates server. Please check your connection, then try again, or try again later."

The current path for the upgrade server is in the latest version is:
UpdateServer: www.sprint.com
UpdateServerPath: /pcs3gcm/novatelwireless/S620/

When combined to form a URL I get a page not found. I tried www.sprintpcs.com and the same path and get a site map page.

It would be nice to have this bug fixed so we would not have to go to www.sprintpcs.com/downloads to get the latest version.

Let me know if you need more info on this issue. I can provide as much as you need.
