The capabilities of ExpressCards would definitely be 'on-topic'. Anyway, I'm disappointed it's not Rev A (just my opinion). I doubt we'd see a new line of Rev 0 PCMCIA cards and I'd expect the same for ExpressCards. Rev A phones are expected in October or so.

I suppose having at least some option of EVDO E-cards is better than none.

I see much lamenting the huge step backward in EVDO support with the new MacBooks but I haven't seen a post describing a solution. I'm not giving up my Treo 650, so attaining a broadband connection using a cell phone isn't going to work for me.

Has anyone been able to successfully interface a Kyocera KPC-650 PCM card, or a similar card, to the MacBook and make it work? If so, please provide details. I understand there are a myriad of adaptors and USB interfaces, etc. Has anyone actually made a PCM modem card work with a MacBook using any of these adaptors/interfaces?

Why on earth Apple with release its new flagship line of laptops with absolutley no EVDO support whatsoever is amazing to me. I could care less what fine new technology the Express Card will be someday. Today its useless to me. Apple should have created its own workaround until an Express Card compatible with the MB was released.

Sorry, I'm going through EVDO w/drawal.

Apple isn't standing alone on this issue, there were many manufacturers before Apple and more after that have gone down the same road, AND have the same issues, see:

This is what makes it so difficult for me to believe there isn't some level of EVDO support for the Express Card format now. Surely, there is some work around in existence today that would allow us to limp along for the time being. Express Card and Tomorrow seem to be synonymous. What about today?

Remember last year? We had to go through all sorts of crazy workarounds to get the PCMCIA modem cards to work w/ our PowerBooks before Verizon stepped up to the plate and offered full support for the Mac. It's frustrating to be reliving that nightmare all over again.

I'll never understand the computer technology industry. A standard should remain the standard until the new standard is adequately supported. To just ditch a widely used standard for the sake of embracing the technology of tomorrow w/o providing some way to get through today is very interesting logic indeed.

I agree with you. This isn't just an Apple issue, it's an industry issue.

Verizon is in the process of sending Novatel XV620 ExpressCards to their warehouses, we are expecting the ability to order them by the end of this week and to be available next week.

For an email notification when they are available, see:

Well, thankfully we just got Real Support (tm) in 10.4.7.

Michael,

This is great news! Thanks for the info.

Lugging my PB 15" around to serve as a router for my MB is getting annoying. Man, that bag gets heavy after awhile.

Are there any driver hacks to make the Dell EVDO express card work with the MacBook? If so, would this card function with Verizons's Wireless Broadband network?

We are waiting for the Verizon Novatel V640 card to do testing, this is the one that will work with MacBook Pro. It may be possible to use the Verizon VZAccess Manager with the Dell Card, but we are not sure until we get it to test.

More info in this thread:
