This EV-DO cellular PC Card for laptops is of the budget variety, and, as they say, you get what you pay for.

Lowest priced Verizon EV-DO card.

Slower than the competition. No Mac support. No external antenna jack

I get >1Mb down/100K up consistently with a PC5740 and Verizon EVDO. Last night I hit 2.1Mb on download.com, sustained for over 4 minutes. Is that slow?

No, that is not slow.

I have found it best to measure without Venturi turned on and using http://www.dslreports.com/stest

Also, keep in mind, that when doing benchmarks, it matters on:

- location
- number of other users using your EVDO tower while doing the benchmark
- Venturi on or off
- which benchmark site you are using (not all are equal)
- signal strength
- with or without external antenna or amplifier

The important thing, is that you are happy with what you got, and if you are getting 2.1 pure raw performance, you now have the record, the fastest I was able to go once was 1.9mb.

There is a 2.26Mb recorded below on Sprint. But I didn't include it in the performance measuring thread I've been tracking from these results because that didn't seem realistic.

Sprint..

Verizon..
http://www.dslreports.com/archive/myvzw.com

Some of the performance sites do not have very realistic results. Some have shown upload speeds of 2Mb-4Mb/sec for EVDO which is impossible. Of dozens I've tried, this one appears to give the most consistent, realistic results...

OK, I was just wondering if I should trade up for a "better" card. For the most part I'm very happy with the service. I disabled Venturi after the first couple of days.

I just ran three tests from Cleveland, OH at 8 AM from dslreports, speakeasy, and frontiernet, all west coast servers, and averaged only 500K down/75K up. My fastest speed test results were from speakeasy about a week ago. Those are the ones that topped out at 1200K. Haven't seen a speed test result that fast since then, especially--ironically--since I ran DrTCP and changed my rwin to 65700 as suggested, but none of that seems to reflect my actual browsing experience. I'm regularly streaming 700K video, and more than occasionally I do get the dream connection from an ftp server or http download.

When Venturi is enabled, you will get misleading benchmark results, this page explains why:
