| Quote: | Verizon Wireless Brings BroadbandAccess to New BlackBerry 7130e With Tethered Modem Capabilities
New BroadbandAccess Connect Service Bundles Tethering Option in Verizon Wireless' Voice, Data Plans
BEDMINSTER, N.J. and WATERLOO, Ontario, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless and Research In Motion (RIM) (Nasdaq: RIMM: TSX: RIM), today introduced the BlackBerry 7130e(TM), the first BlackBerry® handset that takes advantage of Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service on the company's Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network. Coupled with Verizon Wireless' new BroadbandAccess Connect pricing, the BlackBerry 7130e delivers all the popular e-mail and data capabilities available with the BlackBerry wireless platform and can also serve as a modem for customers who want to use the device to connect their laptop with Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service.
With BroadbandAccess Connect, customers can use their BlackBerry 7130e as a modem for downloading large documents to a laptop at speeds averaging 400 to 700 kbps on Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service that covers more than 140 million Americans in 171 major metropolitan markets. BroadbandAccess Connect is available for $15 with any Verizon Wireless BlackBerry voice and unlimited data plan beginning at $79.99; or $30 with the purchase of a BlackBerry data-only plan for $49.99.
"BroadbandAccess is rapidly becoming the standard for wireless connectivity in the business world," said Bill Stone, vice president of marketing for Verizon Wireless. "BroadbandAccess Connect on the new Blackberry 7130e introduces another option for customers who view office mobility and speed as a competitive advantage in their business."
"The BlackBerry 7130e together with Verizon Wireless' fast EV-DO network is a powerful tool for mobile professionals who want the power and productivity benefits of BlackBerry in a sophisticated mobile phone design," said Don Morrison, chief operating officer at Research In Motion. "The BlackBerry 7130e is an excellent choice for customers looking to upgrade their existing phone with a more powerful handset that combines a full featured phone with industry-leading wireless e-mail and data applications."
The new BlackBerry 7130e combines comprehensive phone functionality with the renowned BlackBerry platform features, including support for 'push-based' wireless e-mail, Web browser, text messaging, personal organizer and other corporate data applications. Seamlessly operating on Verizon Wireless' NationalAccess 1XRTT and BroadbandAccess EV-DO network technologies, the sleek and stylish BlackBerry 7130e with chrome accents delivers enhanced usability as well as fast Web and data handling in conjunction with Verizon Wireless' BroadbandAccess service on the high speed EV-DO network.
The BlackBerry 7130e handset offers top-of-the-line features such as a large, bright, high resolution LCD screen that has been optimized for indoor and outdoor viewing, Bluetooth® support for certain profiles, 64MB of flash memory, dedicated "send" and "end" phone keys, an intuitive user interface as well as excellent battery life.
The BlackBerry 7130e also features SureType(TM) keyboard technology from RIM. SureType effectively converges a wireless device keypad and a QWERTY keyboard to fit elegantly within the size of a traditional wireless phone form factor. Through an integrated keyboard and software system, SureType provides users with an instinctively familiar look and feel and enables them to dial phone numbers and type messages quickly, accurately and comfortably.
For corporate customers, BlackBerry Enterprise Server(TM) software tightly integrates with Microsoft® Exchange, IBM Lotus® Domino(TM) and Novell GroupWise® and works with existing enterprise systems to enable secure, push-based, wireless access to e-mail and other corporate data. For individuals and smaller businesses, BlackBerry Internet Service(TM) allows users to access up to ten corporate and/or personal e-mail accounts (including Microsoft Exchange, IBM Lotus Domino and many popular ISP e-mail accounts) from a single device. |
What is very exciting (and interesting), is that Verizon is now offering a tethered modem option. This allows you to use your EVDO Phone as a modem to your laptop. Before this announcement, you were not allowed to do this.

Sounds nice.
I would love to be able to buy that phone and connect to it via Bluetooth for a wireless modem.
Problem is, Verizon disables most features of Bluetooth, about the only thing you can do with a Verizon phone with Bluetooth is use a wireless headset. |

I agree that in the past Verizon has disabled Bluetooth functionality. However, it appears that if they are advertising a tethered modem option, that the probably have Bluetooth enabled. Only problem with BlueTooth 1.0 is that it will only be able to go around 143K, even if you are in a 400K - 700K area, so using a USB cable will get you much better performance (unless BlueTooth 2.0 is in this device, anyone know?) _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

| This is also good news for people who want to use products like KR1 with their phone for tethered data. |

| Does anyone know if you can get broadband access with the new blackberry? The iBook 12" doesn't have a pc slot. How do laptops access the internet using the Blackberry as the modem? |

I called Verizon and it seems that USB is the way it needs to connect for tethered modem access and it is Windows only... Anyone find a work-around to make a happy Mac user even happier?
BTW Lost, yes it is EVDO connection. |

friends:
i could scrap my EVDO card, and SidekickII if the new blackberry will do voice and data at the same time. i don't know of any current device that does.
i like being able to send email and AIM on the Sidekick while talking, and i definitely like being online with the EVDO card and talking on my treo650!
thanks,

so, basically they want to charge for using it as a modem? why should we pay to use it as a modem when you are already being charged the unlimited access fee?
in short, you will have to pay them $15 a month to not be harassed. |

The unlimited plan on a pda with voice is 44.99 (plus whatever voice plan you have). The unlimited plan on a laptop with a pc-card modem is 59.99 if you are also a voice customer, and 79.99 if you are a data only customer.
Now that you can USB tether the blackberry, the logic is that you need to pay the same price for the unlimited data as if you were using an aircard. It would be nice if Verizon simplified all of this and simply lowered the price for PDA's and Aircards to 44.99, but I seriously doubt that will happen since they just recently started offering the 59.99 unlimited pc card plan (down from 79.99).
Competition will drive the price down over time.
Also, I have to imagine that bluetooth tether is not being offered due to the fact that it would SIGNIFICANTLY degrade the data througput performance on EVDO. |
