| Any word on what the latency improvement will be? I get about 200-400ms ping times currently. HSDPA will supposedly have 60ms avg latency. Hope Rev A competes with that. |

I'm not buying the 60ms HSDPA claims. I've been in the wireless Cellular Data business for over 10 years, and latency is and always will be an issue for wireless. And to think that the carriers want bad latency to avoid VOIP is quite silly. Think about it - Verizon's push-to-talk service is VOIP, and they get plastered in the press constantly about the latency. Truth is, all the carriers are working towards VOIP as part of the CDMA roadmap. VOIP will save the carriers millions of dollars just on transport from the cell sites.
Then why are we not using VOIP yet on CDMA? Bottom line is QOS - the current infrastructure technology is not capable of delivering end-to-end QOS (Quality of Service).
Latency will always be a problem on a wireless link. If you had a layer 2/3 packet sniffer, you would see that your EVDO card makes so many corrections, retransmissions, and error recovery that it's amazing it works as fast as it does. Radio link-layer improvements have come a long way in my time, and I'm certain that mobile RF systems will never approach the latency of a piece of copper.
The latency exists as part of the radio layer. Place a call from a cell phone to another cell phone. Hold them up to each ear. Speak into one cell phone, you will notice a 1000ms delay to the other receiver. No one wants the delay, but we have to live with it. |

| It sure would be very interesting to have every 4 months an EVDO Rev A vs 802.16e prototype "shoot out" as the technology evolves. |

Rev A is still on target to pilot next year for both Sprint/Verizon last I heard. What's not clear is if it will be a firmware upgrade to current cards or if it requires a new radio. I've heard mixed messages but it seems it will require a new card/smartphone to get Rev A.
Anyone have a source of confirmation? |

Sub-100ms ping time is fantastic, but I'd bet that tower was very very close. Even so, the best I've seen Rev Zero do is about 150ms so this clearly a significant improvement. Gamers and VoIP users will be very pleased.
Looking forward to Rev('nitup) Aaaa. |

| Quote: | Verizon Wireless Selects Lucent Technologies For CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A Technology
Rev. A Enables Verizon Wireless to Provide a Range of New Services Including Voice over IP
BASKING RIDGE, NJ and MURRAY HILL, NJ — Verizon Wireless and Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today announced that Verizon Wireless has selected Lucent to deploy CDMA2000® 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) technology into its nationwide network. Lucent's Rev. A solution, which consists of incremental hardware and software upgrades to Verizon Wireless' existing Lucent-supplied base stations, will enable Verizon Wireless to introduce a range of new services such as enhanced push-to-talk, messaging, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
With this agreement, Lucent will continue to be one of Verizon Wireless' primary next-generation network infrastructure suppliers. Financial details are not being disclosed.
"EV-DO Rev. A is a robust technology that will allow us to provide our customers with new services that blend voice, data, video and multimedia applications," said Ed Salas, vice president of network planning, Verizon Wireless. "Lucent has long been a key partner and has helped us provide our customers the most satisfying wireless experience possible. Going forward, we're going to count on Lucent as we roll out services, like Voice Over IP, that will help advance the way people communicate."
Verizon Wireless and Lucent completed the industry's first, live, over-the-air calls using EV-DO Rev. A technology in August 2005, and have since conducted live VoIP and video telephony calls using the EV-DO Rev. A Quality of Service (QoS) feature.
"Verizon Wireless and Lucent have been working together for years to deliver the most advanced mobile services to end users, and this agreement is another example of this continuing effort," said Lisa DeLaurentis, vice president of sales for Lucent Technologies. "Our EV-DO Rev. A solution will enable Verizon Wireless to cost-effectively upgrade its network to support new and exciting lifestyle- and productivity-enhancing services."
CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A is an enhanced version of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO that increases the efficiency, data speeds and capacity of existing EV-DO networks. EV-DO Rev. A enables users to receive data (forward link) at speeds up to 3.1 Megabits per second (Mbps) and send data (reverse link) at speeds of up to 1.8 Mbps. These increased forward and reverse link data speeds reduce data latency and will enable operators such as Verizon Wireless to deliver VoIP and other multimedia services. |
