Hello All, Life is good down here in South East Florida, That is if you don't mind not having electric, cell phones, food, gas, some of the other luxeries of life we all take for granted. We do how ever in most areas, have Bell South Phone Serice (hard wired) and best of all, My EVDO when I need it for news or insurance info,
my Nice 5220 EVDO Verizon modem is working like a charm. My Ant Enhancements are doing good too. From Booster Ant and Maxium Signal. Can't use the amp all to much, but the Anttenas are doing what they do.
Well, when I am not out chopping trees, busting up fences that are destroyed, to put at the curb. Navigating in a car down here is fun too, Power lines down every where, trees have bocked many roads, so getting around them makes a normal ride like one in a maze. Concrete Light Posts, are snapped in half, Trackor trailers are blown on thier sides. And all the other damage we have come use to seeing after a hurricane.
But, Live is good, I still have a home, most of the roof is still on it, No one I know got hurt. I live in NW Broward County. The best thing is, neighbor helping neighbor. They have no idea when we willl get power back yet. From the looks of what I saw when I took a short drive, it may be a while.
But, Even if Cell Phones Ain't a Workin, my EVDO Is,, Now I just have to find places to charge up the laptop... As bad as it is down here, I hope everyone faired well enouh to have time to post on here as I have.
Time to find some coffee, somewhere, and get to work soon. Later All

Jim,
Thanks for the update, the important thing is that everyone is safe. Best of luck with the remaining challenges AND we are glad that your EVDO card is working. There have been a lot of sales to people in Florida over the last 2 weeks, so hopefully, others are staying connected and helping one another too.
I have a simple favor to ask. Can you post a message here when either UPS, FedEx or USPS start delivering. We had a guy order a Verizon data card for this past Saturday delivery and UPS screwed up and didn't deliver and now it is held up in Kentucky. I want to get him out another card, but need to hear from the "street" who actually starts doing deliveries first.
Thanks! _________________ EVDO :: EVDO News :: EVDO Antennas :: Buy Verizon :: Buy Sprint :: EVDO Amplifier |

Hello Micheal,,
The USPS was out delivering mail today. I haven't seen any FedEx or UPS trucks out running around as of yet. Gas is very limited right now. So I am sure that is why FedEx and UPS may not be delivering. Just heard on the local news, that Fort Luaderdale Airport is due to resume operations on Thursday. I Know the FedEx facility at the Airport took some pretty good damage too.
Hope some of this helps you. EVDO is working great !!! Cell Phones are still down or very sparatic. |

Here is a related press release that Verizon just released:
| Quote: | Florida Network Restoration Near Completion In Wake Of Hurricane Wilma
Drive Tests Confirm Verizon Wireless Network in Florida Again Outperforming Competition After Storms
10/31/2005
BOCA RATON, FL -- Verizon Wireless has restored its digital network in Florida to near full capacity across the state in the wake of Hurricane Wilma, with fewer than three percent of cell sites in the impacted areas still out of service. Teams of network technicians continue to work to restore and maintain reliable wireless service throughout Florida’s southeast and southwest coasts following the Category 3 storm.
Those technicians have been joined by teams of real-life “test men and women” – on whom the character in the popular “Can you hear me now? Good” ad campaign is based – who continue to canvass the impacted areas in special computer-equipped vehicles to test wireless networks in the wake of Wilma. Drive tests on October 28th and 29th show that the Verizon Wireless network in South Florida completed a higher percentage of voice calls than other wireless networks.
Driving Interstate 95 and the Florida Turnpike from Vero Beach to Homestead, the “call success rate” on the Verizon Wireless network measured about 92 percent, compared to competitors that ranged as low as 36 percent to at best 86 percent. Checking along major east-west routes in Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, Verizon Wireless completed about 99 percent of calls, again best among all carriers tested.
Among the major national carriers, the voice call success rates were as follows:
Carrier: Verizon Wireless
Hurricane Wilma – October 28: 97.22%
Hurricane Wilma – October 29: 98.86%
Carrier 1
Hurricane Wilma – October 28:65.28%
Hurricane Wilma – October 29:60.92%
Carrier 2
Hurricane Wilma – October 28: 85.71%
Hurricane Wilma – October 29: 87.21%
Carrier 3
Hurricane Wilma – October 28: 95.83%
Hurricane Wilma – October 29: 90.80%
Carrier 4
Hurricane Wilma – October 28: 90.14%
Hurricane Wilma – October 29: 94.38%
“We’re testing to ensure our network is operating at the level that our customers deserve and expect,” said Mike Lanman, Verizon Wireless Florida region president. “Reliability is critical and we will continue to invest significant resources and effort to prepare and respond effectively.”
Verizon Wireless has invested more than $800 million in its Florida network during the past five years alone, plus millions more in preparation and response to Hurricane Katrina and other storms in 2005 and 2004. The company invests more than $4 billion nationwide each year – about $1 billion every 90 days – in its advanced voice and data networks.
Hurricane Wilma network restoration efforts include about 50 cell sites now being powered by permanent built-in generators (in Florida about 80 percent of all Verizon Wireless cell sites have built-in generators), and another 89 sites powered by portable generators. Several cell-on-wheels – mobile cell sites known as COWs – have been installed to boost network capacity.
Verizon Wireless employees have invested hundreds of thousands of man-hours in preparing for and responding to Hurricane Wilma. Network preparations included:
- Fine-tuning the company’s digital network across the state to add call capacity in threatened areas before the storm hit.
- Strategically positioning fleets of mobile generators and mobile cell sites to be deployed immediately in any hard-hit areas.
- Pre-arranging fuel delivery to the mobile units and generators at permanent cell sites to keep the network operating even if power is lost for an extended period of time. |

I live around Ft Lauderdale. My signal strength was wavering and weak until I trashed preferences on my Powerbook. After I started VZ Access a message came up saying "Switching locations" and now the signal is stronger not only on my Powerbook but I am holding connections on my PC laptop also whereas before I could not. So apparently Wilma took out a tower or something and the software switched locations to a different tower...I think. _________________ Sony T250 1.2 Ghz & 17" Powerbook 1.5 Ghz |

| I'm in western broward. Weston to be exact we were hit really hard luckily most of our power runs underground so most of Weston has power back on now. The day after Wilma hit I lost signal inside my house, I needed to go outside to pickup another tower, the service was back to normal the next day I’m guessing the towers generator ran out of fuel. I think it's time to pick up a booster antenna for times like this |

Wow, I knew Macs were great and drive Windows IT guys nuts, but I didn't know that trashing prefs on a Mac would improve function on Windows...
