you *can* connect to router via ethernet cable and turn off the wifi radio via router admin.

you are not "forced" to use wifi.

I saw that and had previously tried it with no success. That is a CAT-5
cable, isn't it?
The modem was still not detected.

i dont have another house within .5 miles of me so wifi is not really a problem, but if they can sit in front of my house long enough to figure out my wpa key without getting shot at...they are more than welcome to browse my mp3 collection or use my printer...hell if they print to it, i will even carry it out to them

...if for nothing but ask how they did it

...hell i can barely type the darn key in myself

My concern about using wifi is connections to my bank and credit card accounts.
Besides that the signal is 10% compared to 80-100% for the cellular broadband in my area, with external antenna in use.

this is a photo of UM150 attached to CTR350, that has ethernet cable running to a desktop pc:

aside from that hard wired connection, the CTR350 can simultaneously allow computers to connect via wifi.

The picture looks good but does the mobile broadband dialup connection appear in Network Connections?

I just tried it again, this time with pci wireless G card, and Sprint Compass 597 will only connect with Wifi. Mobile broadband is not detected.

[FWIW, I got the same as using USB wireless G adapter but more signal this time or it was daytime vs nighttime or different time whatever.]

i think one of us is confused about how these things work together.

when an EVDO device is operating attached to a router, computers connect to the router either via tcp/ip ethernet, or wifi.

computers trying to connect to the internet through the router, would not look for a 'mobile broadband' connection of any sort.

Cool

My problem is solved through tech support and I'm using the EVDO in Cradleppont 350 router via tcp/ip ethernet LAN

Thanks.

FWIW Very Happy
I don't need the wireless g card for desktop because I'm not using a wireless network. I'm just using Cradlepoint 350 for cellular EVDO connection via LAN and no WiFi.
This works fine but my LAN line was all used up for the router so I tried connecting Linksys router that I had and connection worked still, giving me capability of 2 LAN connections. I only needed one to my laptop, which is not wireless.

Think I've got the best of 2 worlds unless you see a problem. Cool

Alright, so things have changed a little since my initial post. I'm going with networking my desktop and laptop for file and printer sharing only, and using the cellular modem on either machine having installed Verizon's VZAccess Manager software on both.

I have the desktop wired to the router, reset the router, and now have a network between the two. I attemped to make a wireless connection on the laptop to the network, wasn't working, got frustrated, shut it down and went out to dinner. Just got back and booted up the laptop. Verizon's software, which normally starts up and makes the cellular broadband connection, showed that it was *trying* to make the broadband connection AND it also listed the network! They seemed to be in conflict as the broadband connection wouldn't complete, so I disabled the Wireless Network Connection in Network Connections and the software completed the broadband connection so I could get online.

So apparently Verizon's software manages ALL network connections, internet AND local???

TIA,
Paula

As I understand it you have the modem in the router and your desktop is wired to the router directly. You also have a laptop you want to connect via WiFi to the router.

If that is the case you do not use the Verizon software at all. You cannot use the router with Verizon software. You let your laptop find the wireless network via its on-board wireless network adapter (assuming your laptop has one). There should be an icon in the system tray that you can click and see available networks. Select the one that says CTRxxx. Don't use the Verizon software with the router, they don't work together.

No, I don't have the modem in the router. Like I said, I'm using the router to network the two computers for file and printer sharing only.

Now that I've got the network setup between the router, desktop and laptop only, I'm getting "permissions" errors everytime I try to navigate to the files on the desktop from the laptop. One minute I can see the Mshome network, next I can't. When I can, it lists the desktop, but it won't let me open it to see the shared files. I can even see the printers, altho I get Error messages when I try to print.

For whatever reason networks seem to go in and out on a whim, I'm now at a point where I'm about to dump the router all together because *apparently* I don't even need it to do what I'm trying to do. I don't know if the problems I'm having now have anything to do with the router or not (probably not), but I figure one less component to this system can only have a positive effect on it all.

But now I know why IT guys make the BIG bucks! What a pain in the a**. It's just a shame that Network Magic requires an internet connection because after what I've gone thru with this in the past week, that software was TRULY magical! It did it ALL and it did it WELL. For those of us not interested in a crash course in networking, it's a God-send.
