I couldn't help it and upgraded to 1.3, the firmware can still be downloaded if you know where to look..
I really wanted to play with the load balancer, however since updating it wont connect with my sprint blackberry 8703e.. has no issues with my 595U however and I had no other problems since updating.
The blackberry device just gets stuck on "Establishing..." and the device it self does not indicate its going into modem mode, just charging.
Thus no load balancer testing, the previous firmware worked.. I am tempted to downgrade just to verify.
Hope they get this all fixed soon... Love my cradlepoint |

Question:
I have a Sprint USB Compass 597 and the CTR-500 router. If I were to upgrade to the 1.3 Firmware and purchase Sprint ExpressCard Modem... plug it to the router and then enable the load balancing.. Would I see a significant gain in download speeds? Or would I have to have a modem with another carrier to get faster speeds? |

Hey Dreadlocks, where are you able to find that 1.3 release? _________________ teaspoon |

Yes and no. Load balancing works when what you're trying to download is distributed. Meaning, if it's a web site or FTP with a single source address, I don't think it will help you. However, if it's something like bittorrent or a web site which distributes all its content, then you should see better performance. Another nice side effect of load balancing is that it will distribute your downloads over multiple plans, which can be nice if your going over your 5Gig plan. So far I've seen some good speed on downloading torrents (200KBps to 350KBps, bytes with a B), but loading Slashdot seems to take more time then a single modem. I think there is some overhead that still needs to be optimized. Hope that helps. |

I believe you need two accounts (can be the same carrier), as I believe that you cannot have two cards for the same account (or at least logged on at the same time). someone correct me if I am wrong.
You are going to see enhanced throughput when more than one connection goes in or out the door at the same time. For example, do two speed tests at the same time. When I do this, I get results from two the two different carriers I am using (Sprint/AlTell).
I can also stream more than one video (for example) and open the router's stats page, and watch the numbers climb for both modems (or watch both modems light flash).
The two places I see a massive speedup is
(a) When I open a bunch of webpages at the same time
(b) When one or more of our associates is surfing the web at the same time (this is great when you have multiple people accessing the web though the router).
One problem I see is doing banking or other secure work, where the server on the other side might be expecting all of your connections to be from the same IP block, and all of a sudden, the router makes a new connection from a different provider. So far, I'm not really concerned.
A couple of notes/suggestions for users:
1) You can reset the modem that is used as primary, by disconnecting one of the modems though the router setup page waiting a seconds, then reconnecting. The setting will stay until something in the connection hiccups. I still wish there was a way to set the default primary modem used.
2) It might be nice for CradlePoint to add a setting for an optional 2nd/3rd/4th gateway where:
a) The default gateway would use load balancing.
b) The 2nd gateway would only use the primary modem
b) The 3rd gateway would only use the 2nd modem in line.
c) The 4rd gateway would only use the 3nd modem in line.
This way, when load balancing is in effect, you could direct some connections to a specific modem.
ie: Joe could use Modem 1, Lynda could use Modem 2, VM#1 could use Modem #3, VM#2 could use load balancing.
Or put another way, I could direct most of my traffic to Alltel (where it is unlimited), some of my to Sprint (where a cap might apply), and for some of my work, use the load balance to get maximum throughput.

first of all, the "simply everything" plans do not include phone-as-modem tethering. (hardly simple, eh?)
second, if you wanted to use two phones with a router, each would need their own data plans.
each monthly charge (line of service) can only have one active device at a time. you can own multiple devices, but only one can ever be in use at a time. |

some cell towers are not going to have adequate backhaul to make it worthwhile if you have multiple devices from same carrier.
using devices from different carries, ensures a better chance at maximum benefit from load balancing. |

Thanks Alex..
So it sounds like I would need to get an Alltel or A T&T Express card ... plus corresponding data plan with that company, before I could truly get the load balancing to work on the CTR500.
Is that correct? |

no, not entirely.
you CAN get load balancing to "work" with ANY two active devices.
i was saying that there may be some towers where having two of same carrier devices would offer no realized performance benefit, and that having them be from different carriers would ensure better chance at maximum performance on a consistent basis. |

Got it working, somehow content protection got enabled on the Blackberry.. disabled it and its load balancing just fine as far as I can tell.
the firmware is no longer online for download.. |

Sorry if I'm posting this question in the wrong place? But I'd really like to know how you actually go about upgrading the firmware on one of these routers? Since your not physically connected to it, it seems like a pretty dangerous procedure if you were to lose connection to the device for even the briefest moment? Am I missing something here? I've created a brick or two in the past but this just looks like a disaster begging to happen.

Does ANY include the ethernet WAN port? As I look at it, that does not appear to be true, but worth asking, anyway. One of my connections is a consumer-grade satellite connection, and would be perfect to load-balance with my Sprint account. |

Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be possible (at least not at the moment). I had the same idea. However, when load balancing is enabled the router seems work in 1 of 2 modes at single time:
1) ethernet WAN only
2) load balancing over all of the other devices plugged in
I haven't even been able to get it to work with 2 UM150s. Whichever one is assigned as the secondary WAN (which actual modem it is doesn't seem to make a difference) disconnects and reconnects every few minutes. |
